When people bring Jesus a deaf man with a speech impediment, he curiously “put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue” (Mark 7:33b). Jesus not only heals the man, but by connecting his word with deed, he seeks to address his disciples’ spiritual blindness and deafness. 1. A friend in need (vs. 31-32)2.
